Pierre Omidyar, the 32-year-old founder and chairman of eBay, is the fourth richest person in the United States under 40 years of age, according to Fortune magazine's America's 40 Richest Under 40 list. The inaugural list estimates Omidyar's worth at $3.69 billion -- not bad for an enterprise that began in response to Omidyar's girlfriend's passion for Pez dispensers.
Omidyar doesn't have to worry about coming in fourth. He's in the presence of some heavy-duty company. The top spot went to Dell Computer's Michael Dell ($21.49 billion), while Amazon.com's Jeff Bezos ($5.74 billion) and Gateway's Ted Waitt ($5.44 billion) came in second and third place. Jeff Skoll, 33, eBay's VP of strategic planning and analysis, also made the list at No. 10, with $1.35 billion.
Other noteworthy folks include Yahoo cofounders David Filo ($3.12 billion) and Jerry Yang ($3.5 billion), Scott Blum of Buy.com ($1.66 billion), and Marc Ewing of Red Hat ($775 million). Michael Jordan ($357 million) and No Limit Enterprises CEO and rapper Master P ($361 million) were the only non-Internet individuals who cracked the top 40. Also of note: not one woman made the list.
Fortune compiled the list by examining SEC filings and insider-tracking records, as well as by monitoring market volatility.
